Prompting 101

Prompting Basics

Prompts are the conversation starter with the AI tool you’re using. You might write several prompts as the conversation progresses. Prompting is FAR from an exact science - it’s more like communications art! The right combination of words can make huge differences in outcomes, even if we don’t always know in advance about which prompt will work best. Good prompts = better outputs

Tips for Effective Prompting

  • Use natural language. Write as if you’re speaking to another person.

  • Be specific and concise, but provide as much context as possible. Think of the AI as a smart but forgetful new employee who doesn’t know much about you or what you do.

  • Make it an ongoing conversation. Ask the AI to fix and change things as you go along. Start with Pi AI - it’s a fun and easy model to interact with!

  • Fun fact: According to Google, the most effective prompts are around 21 words).

  • Give the AI examples of what you want (few shot prompting), or write a list of instructions you want the AI to follow (chain of thought prompting).

  • You can use ChatGPT’s customization feature in settings to personalize your responses or ask it to remember specific things about you in the future.
